On the site of a long-extinct volcano stands the oldest castle in the Burgenland area, built in 1157 as a defence. In this area, which has been fought over since time immemorial, the castle once offered protection from danger threatened from the east. Following extensive restoration work, the whole complex of the stronghold is now preserved in the state in which it was more than 200 years ago.
