Murau timber world

The region in western upper Styria comprises 43 communities in the districts of Judenburg ("Styrian Zirbenland"), Knittelfeld and Murau. Between 1981 and 1991, there was a drop of more than 24% in jobs in the district of Murau, and 75% of the farmers are mountain farmers. In this region, one of the areas of Styria that is most rich in forests, forestry has always been of great importance. Cultural and tourist innovations on the theme of wood were realised as long as ten years ago: A regional wood museum was established, and since then the "Styrian timber route" has demonstrated the importance of wood as a raw material for the region.
