Regional planning Association, Pielachtal

Pielach valley extends from the edge of the Kalkalpen [limestone alps] in Lower Austria, northwards to the lowlands around the provincial capital St. Pölten. The region is characterised by small-scale agriculture, the economic importance of which is however still great. The Mariazell railway, which is becoming less important in terms of transport but more important for tourism, has a history going back more than 100 years. One of the aims in establishing the association of initially six local authorities, now eight, in 1996 was to utilise its status as an “Objective 5b” region. The largest project that has been implemented so far is the land development project “Pielach valley eco cycle”, which has supported small regional economic cycles and the linking of ecological and economic activities.
