The Nixhöhle (“water sprites’ cave”) is one of the most beautiful natural monuments and one of the biggest tourist attractions in Lower Austria. Striking dripstone formations and the snowy-white rock milk layers make this tour an unforgettable experience.

The Nixhöhle is located approximately 1 km away from Frankenfels and is one of the most beautiful natural monuments and one of the biggest tourist attractions in the province. Striking dripstone formations and the snowy-white rock milk layers make this tour an unforgettable experience.
Caves, dripstones, deposits of tufa are typical of this region: the “Kalkalpen”, or limestone alps. The limestone rocks are soft, porous and permeable. Over millions of years, the effect of the water has resulted in fantastic rooms and shapes. It is not just the soil and the vegetation, but even the interior of the mountain that is characterised by the limestone rocks.

Opening time and conditions

From 1st May to 26th October, every Sunday at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2.30 p.m. and 4 p.m. In July and August there is an additional tour every Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Activity

After a 20-minute uphill walk through a beech wood, you reach the entrance to the Nixhöhle. The guided tour starts here. A fortified path leads for just under a kilometre into the mountain. Sturdy footwear and warm clothes are recommended. The cave has electric lighting throughout
