The bringing together of a wide variety of functions “under one roof” in a modern building embedded in existing village structures, involves not only the concentration but also the clarification of public space. The project, which envisages two new buildings overall, was the winner of an open competition (with 28 entries) held in 2001. The first stage in construction, the cultural and commercial building, was completed in October 2003. The construction of the fire station and mountain rescue station as well as the conversion of the foyer of an existing community centre followed in 2004. The overall effect of the ensemble of these three sections is important – as the framework for a small, protected yet permeable village square, none of the buildings stands completely alone.
Architecture Centre
The following text is taken from an article
provided by the Achitecture Centre and was written by Gabriele Kaiser.
The permeability of the cultural and commercial centre is
intensified on its longitudinal facades in the ground floor area, using floor
to ceiling glazing and a smooth asphalt floor which seems to flow through the
building. There is a clear view of the square behind (and later
of the façade of the fire station). The
different functions of the bank, the tourist office and hairdresser are placed
next to each other like layers, the first floor with its “concentrated” use is
accessed right from the centre. Those
rooms facing away from the street, intended for village music and the library,
look towards the expansive green spaces in the south. The back-lit information wall of the Franz Michael
Felder Museum
(the writer, popular educator and social reformer, born in 1839 in Schoppernau,
compiled a dictionary of the local dialects, the Bregenzer Idiotikon)
stretches the whole length of the building corpus and interacts with the real
images of the village seen through two floor-to-ceiling windows in the gable
walls.
The architects worked with untreated, carefully worked local silver fir both in
the outer cladding (horizontal rhomboid cladding) and in the interior.
Rough-sawn wood floors give the rooms of the upper floor a character of
tangible intimacy. (Text: Gabriele Kaiser)
F.M. Felder
Franz-Michael Felder was the most important 19th century poet of Vorarlberg. He was also an important social reformer, who struggled for the social advance of peasants. His life and work is documented in the newly erected village centre.
Franz-Michael Felder:
