Egg Kindergarten

Document Actions
The kindergarten stands demonstratively at the start of the school area. The secondary school is behind, and further back is the senior grammar school. Take the time to see the various buildings in the area and you will immediately recognise the different architectural epochs.

Construction details

A light timber cube, with a decorative concrete facade appears to float on a reinforced-concrete construction – the building is erected of a mixed building method of reinforced concrete and timber. For reasons of acoustic separation from the rehearsal room above, the ground-floor zone to the north of the access corridor was constructed of reinforced concrete. The group rooms and the upper floor are manufactured of timber elements. The facades are clad in untreated local silver fir.

One enters the building via an access path on the east side – which through the created atrium-like entrance situation guarantees the children safe and protected access.

The two group rooms with their own cloakrooms and wet areas on the ground floor are formed as autonomous volumes. The two functional zones are separated by an east-west-orientated central corridor, which is glazed on the front side. The cladding on the walls, the parquet flooring and furniture are all made of wood.

The upper floor offers space for the foyer, meeting room and rehearsal room. The untreated rough-sawn silver fir flooring and the plywood ceilings and walls give good absorption. The visibly smooth wooden boards, which are supported on a steel frame, can be opened through cable control. Together with the moveable wall elements, the room can thus be adapted to meet all acoustic requirements. Acoustic disturbances to neighbouring buildings, and the heating of the premises, are ensured by the fixed glazing of the series of north windows.

Reasons for using  silver fir

About 60% of the woodlands in the municipality of Egg are stocked with silver fir – it was obvious to use this renewable raw material that is available on the spot (also for exemplary effect) in a communal building.

The architecture of the kindergarten is clearly in contrast to the architecture of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. The modern timber body of the building integrates harmonically in the landscape. As a building material, timber has an authentic effect and mediates much stronger the bond with the region than given by the other school buildings. The modern building has an inviting and homely feeling and brings added value to its surroundings.

Egg kindergarten was planned and supervised during building by the Dietrich/Untertrifaller architectural office in Bregenz. The building was completed in May 2004. On a plot of land of about 3,000m², an area of 580m² was built on and a gross floor area of 1,130m² was achieved. The building costs amounted to 1.5 million euro. The kindergarten with two group rooms and an exercise room is on the ground floor. In the cellar are several archive rooms and on the upper floor, which has a separate entrance, is a very high-quality rehearsal room. The room is not only suitable for rehearsals, but also for cultural encounters, because the room has special acoustics and therefore offers the best prerequisites for musical performances.

About the building: a light timber cube, with facades fully comprising untreated silver fir panelling, floats on a reinforced-concrete construction. The regionally typical timber, the silver fir, has been multiply used in the interior. One enters the building via an access path, the atrium-like design of the entrance mediates a feeling of protectiveness and therefore has a very inviting effect. The two group rooms with their own cloakroom and wet areas are independently accessible on the ground floor. The upper floor offers generous space for the foyer, meeting room and rehearsal room. The untreated, rough-sawn silver fir flooring and the plywood ceilings and walls give good absorption, the wooden boards in the ceiling can be opened with a cable control, through which the room can be flexibly adapted to meet all acoustic requirements.

Through artificial ventilation and de-aeration and fixed glazing, acoustic disturbances to the neighbouring buildings are hindered. The building is supplied with energy from the biomass heating plant, which is in the very near vicinity. Despite somewhat higher building costs, it was clear to those responsible that the silver fir as a regional building material was to be used. In the municipal area of Egg, the forest is stocked with a 60% share of silver fir and is therefore considered one of the central areas of occurrence of this precious wood in the region. The authentic building material, silver fir, is also the element that merges the entire building authentically into the landscape.
